Stainless Steel - The Wonder Alloy of Modern Times
Most of us have heard about stainless steel - even the name is evocative of the feelings of cleanliness and hardiness. Stainless steel is part of just about everything that we use today - right from your razor blades to the modes of transportation that we use and in the utensils to eat our food. This wonder alloy is used in diverse fields such as construction, medicine, cookery, hardware, appliances big and small, art and as the primary structural component of materials used in the aerospace and automotive industries. The primary advantage that the stainless steel brings is that it is highly resistant to corrosion. As a result, products made of stainless steel retain their luster and look good for a long time. This is one reason why it is the most popular choice of people who own such products.  It is hardly surprising that the use of stainless steel is increasing rapidly.

What is Stainless Steel?
Stainless steel is made from iron ore and one or more alloy metals such as chromium or nickel. The alloy metals used and their concentration in the final product decides the grade of steel. There are over 150 grades of steel available, with each grade having its own special characteristics. Stainless steel contains around 10-11% chromium and has excellent corrosion resistant properties.  The chromium in the steel protects the iron content by forming a passive layer of chromium oxide that prevents further oxidation of the iron. Interest in such corrosion-resistant properties of the chromium-iron combination had reigned high ever since the early 1800s and culminated in the production of this miracle alloy.

Benefits of Using Stainless Steel
From a layperson’s point of view, stainless steel translates to convenience and aesthetics. The long-lasting stainless steel finishes in products make maintenance a breeze, and the products look good for many years. Small wonder that stainless steel is finding increasing acceptance in practically all areas in the modern home, including those areas with high moisture content such as bathrooms. From an industrial perspective, stainless steel is used to bring strength to structures and appliances, and the wide variety of steels available makes it a versatile component that can be used in many kinds of environments.

Stainless Steel is Eco-friendly too
Did you know that stainless steel is probably an eco-friendly material available? Yes - stainless steel is 100% recyclable, and much of the stainless steel that you use may contain as much as 40% recycled material. This is another reason why this material is so popular.
