Find great value and durability with a
plastic mailbox
At one time plastics were not considered in a favorable light because they were fragile and represented cheap
products. Acceptance of plastic mailboxes is just another indication of how far an inferior material has
come. It would be impossible to think of life without plastics today.
One of the more popular plastic mailboxes is the hunter green molded look that you will find on streets
everywhere in the country. Some have doors on the front and back, and offer a cubicle beneath for the
newspaper. The materials are practically impervious to sunlight, and they will deliver many years of use.
Why do so many people choose plastic mailboxes over the other types? Here are the top reasons.
- Plastic is still cheaper. Although the quality of plastics has increased, cost hasn't
escalated. From a production standpoint, plastic mailboxes are easier because after a mold is made, all
that is required is pouring to produce a finished piece. Other materials have to be sawn, fitted, and
attached to get to the same point.
- Plastic mailboxes can be found everywhere. Availability has a great deal to do with selling
anything. Any hardware store has plastic mailboxes, and many people don't want to bother with special
orders. It is probably harder to find metal mailboxes than it is to find plastic ones.
- Lightweight construction makes plastic easier to work with. Cast iron and steel composition units can
be very cumbersome to deal with during installation. Plastic units weigh very little. Additionally,
a plastic mailbox unit is simple to install. If it is a pedestal-mounted box, a square wood post can be
installed first, and a plastic housing slides over it. It does not take long from start to finish for the
mailbox to be ready for use.
- Upkeep on some mailboxes can be daunting because they rust, corrode, or have defective parts. Plastic
requires little more than hosing off on occasion, and it looks as good as it did when it was new.
- Plastic mailboxes can be designed to look like other materials that cost more. More than the material
composition, people are concerned with how a product looks and performs. For instance, automobiles have a
great many parts made of plastic that appear to be metal.
- People who want odd shaped mail receptacles can receive much more realistic looking ones with plastic
mailboxes than they can from those made of metals because curves are just as easy to make with a mold as
straight lines.
Although mailboxes made from other materials may be as durable as plastic, events occur that cause mailboxes to
be damaged or destroyed. For that reason, replacement costs are a factor to consider with any mailbox
purchase.
For durability, functionality, and appearance, it is difficult to find another product that performs as well for
a mailbox as plastic. None of the other materials can compare based on price alone.
